#13: The Anchor
Ancient sailors made heavy iron hooks to hold their wooden ships in the seabed mud during ocean storms. Along dangerous coastlines, early Mediterranean mariners depended on these devices to survive. Later, early Christian communities used the shape as a concealed symbol, its upper crossbar resembling a cross. Over the centuries, poets, artists, and families adopted the image for tattoos, jewelry, and tombstones.
