#14: The Cowboy Hat
In 1865, hatmaker John B. Stetson created the first “Boss of the Plains” hat for Western pioneers. Made from thick felt, it protected ranch hands from the prairie’s intense sun, sudden rain, and cold winds. Its wide brim could even serve as a scoop for drinking river water, and the tall crown helped insulate the head. Later, dime novels and early Hollywood westerns recast the practical workwear as a legendary fashion statement.
