#18: The Rainbow Flag
Artist Gilbert Baker dyed and stitched the first rainbow banner in San Francisco for a 1978 Pride march. Each color stood for something different: life, healing, sunlight, nature, harmony, or spirit. Activists were looking for a positive image drawn from nature, rather than the older symbols burdened by painful history. As communities continued fighting for equal rights, the banner’s colors appeared in cities around the world.
