#3: The Liberty Bell
In 1751, Pennsylvania lawmakers ordered a plain bronze bell to summon politicians to meetings at the local state house. During its first test strike, the bell cracked. Local metalworkers recast it twice before it was usable. Decades afterward, activists seeking to end slavery drew on its engraved message about freedom and gave it the name Liberty Bell.
