Jon Cryer accepted the role of Lex Luthor in Supergirl (2015) partly because of his earlier connection to the Superman franchise. As a teenager, he appeared in Superman IV: The Quest for Peace (1987), which received harsh reviews. Playing another Luthor decades later gave him a chance to revisit that world.
