Alec Guinness delivered one of the defining mentor performances in cinema with Obi-Wan Kenobi, but his later appearances as the Force spirit feel noticeably more restrained. By the time Return of the Jedi was produced, Guinness had publicly expressed mixed feelings about the overwhelming popularity of Star Wars and the way it overshadowed much of his distinguished career. Although he remained the consummate professional, his brief scenes lack the warmth and curiosity that characterized his earlier performance in the original film.
