#11: The Compromise of 1877 and the End of Reconstruction
The Compromise of 1877 resolved a disputed presidential election by granting Rutherford B. Hayes the presidency. In return, federal troops were withdrawn from the South. This effectively ended Reconstruction and allowed Southern states to roll back many civil rights gains.
