#5: Ghost Stretches of the Original Route 66
Faded pavement can be strangely beautiful when it belongs to Route 66. In some places, the old road runs beside the Interstate like an elder sibling, slower and quieter, with weeds at the edges and the occasional sign trying to hold onto better days. When the Interstate system replaced much of the historic route, diners, motels, gas stations, and small towns lost the stream of travelers that once kept them alive. That does not make every abandoned stretch sad in the same way.
