#9: Los Angeles’s Phantom Beverly Hills Freeway
Some unbuilt roads leave almost no ruins, only the uneasy feeling of what might have been. The Beverly Hills Freeway belonged to Los Angeles’s larger mid-century freeway imagination, when maps could make another expressway seem inevitable. The route would have cut through some of the city’s most influential and expensive neighborhoods, which made resistance especially strong. Unlike communities with less political power, Beverly Hills and nearby areas had the resources and visibility to fight back effectively.
