#3: The Jimmy Carter Peanut Statue in Georgia: Campaign Prop Turned Oddity
Political advertising is usually designed to disappear shortly after an election. Yard signs come down, buttons end up in drawers, and yesterday’s campaign slogan becomes a piece of trivia. A 13-foot peanut with an enormous set of teeth is more difficult to retire quietly. The smiling figure associated with Jimmy Carter was created during his successful 1976 presidential campaign, commissioned by supporters in Indiana as a playful reference to the Georgia candidate’s family peanut business and famous grin. Eventually it found the place where it made the most sense: Plains, Georgia.
