#5: The Chester Teapot in West Virginia: A Business That Couldn’t Be Ignored
The teapot was not originally a teapot, which may be the best part of its history. It began life as a huge wooden barrel used in advertising for Hires Root Beer. In 1938, William “Babe” Devon saw greater possibilities in the structure and converted it into a roadside business in Chester, West Virginia, wrapping it in metal and adding an enormous handle, spout, and lid. From inside, motorists could buy refreshments such as hot dogs, ice cream, and soft drinks. Its new shape was especially appropriate for the region.
