This picture was taken by a wildlife photographer near Stromness Bay, located in South Georgia. The young Antarctic fur seal came over to get a better look at the photographer, who had put some distance between himself and the animals so that he could take pictures without getting too close.
This seal species is distinguished from its smaller counterparts by having a more pointed nose and long neck. After spending approximately four months with their mother before striking out on their own, seal pups eventually leave their mother’s side for a period of several years before beginning their own families.
