#6: Hang-On Put Players on a Motorcycle — Game: Hang-On (1985)
Sega revolutionized arcade racing with Hang-On by replacing conventional controls with a life-sized motorcycle cabinet complete with handlebars. Rather than simply steering with a wheel, players physically leaned left and right while gripping the handlebars to guide their bike around each corner. The cabinet itself tilted in response to body movement, dramatically increasing the illusion of speed and momentum. This combination of physical interaction and visual feedback created an experience unlike anything most players had encountered before. Long before motion controls became common in home gaming, Hang-On demonstrated how body movement could become an integral part of gameplay. It established a blueprint that many later arcade simulators would continue to refine.
