#6: Winchester Mystery House — United States
Sarah Winchester, heir to the Winchester rifle fortune, believed spirits were telling her what to do. Convinced she was haunted by the ghosts of those killed by her family’s product, she started a construction project in 1884 that only ended with her death in 1922. For 38 years, carpenters worked around the clock, creating a sprawling, bizarre mansion. The result is a house with about 160 rooms, full of oddities meant to confuse any spirits that might be following her. You’ll find staircases that lead directly into ceilings, doors that open onto solid walls, and windows that look into other rooms.
