In 1945, the globe was in the midst of the second “Great War.” After his inauguration, Truman and the United States jumped into the fight three years early. Two atomic bombs were ordered to be dropped on Japan by the new President.
As a result of the incident, Japan was forced to submit in September. It was in April when Germany surrendered in Europe. America’s economy was still rebuilding from the Great Depression at the time of the conclusion of the conflict. In 1948, Truman successfully stood for re-election as President, riding a tide of goodwill.
