The Oil Crisis Was to Blame for Fuel Shortages
Long queues may be found at gas stations in 1973, like this one in Portland, Oregon. People would try to get in line as early as possible in the morning or wait until late at night, but even then, there would be long queues.
All of this occurred as a result of the United States’ energy crisis in the 1970s. Oil consumption surged during this time period as domestic output fell, resulting in a reliance on imported oil. An oil embargo was enforced by the Organization of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries in 1973, resulting in sky-high prices and gasoline shortages.
