Sesame Street Became A Children’s Television Hit
In 1970, a photo was taken at the Reeves TeleTape Studio in New York City during a rehearsal for an episode of Sesame Street. With the help of colleague puppeteer Daniel Seagren, Jim Henson is shown here working on Ernie. On the right, Frank Oz plays Bert.
Sesame Street first aired in November 1969, and by the mid-1970s, it had become a cultural icon in the United States. The show was created in 1966 by TV producer Joan Cooney and Carnegie Foundation Vice President Lloyd Morrisett, with the goal of “mastering the addictive properties of television and doing something good with them.”
