A World Chess Champion from the United States
Bobby Fisher, an American, upset Russian Bobby Spassky to win the World Chess Championship in 1972. His triumph put a stop to a Soviet winning streak that extended back to 1948.
The match was dubbed “the Match of the Century” by former world chess champion Garry Kasparov, who described Fischer’s victory as “a crushing moment in the midst of the Cold War.” Spassky is on the left, and Fisher is on the right in this photo.
