When Nixon left, people celebrated in the streets
On the night of then-President Nixon’s resignation address on August 8, 1974, citizens gathered and rejoiced outside the White House. The masses reportedly spilled onto nearby streets, vastly outnumbering the number of pro-Nixon supporters in attendance.
After it was discovered that Nixon was severely involved in the Watergate Scandal, which occurred during his 1972 re-election campaign, he made his declaration. He was on the point of impeachment when he decided to resign himself after being found guilty. He is the first and only president in American history to resign.
