#15: I Wanna Be Your Dog — The Stooges (1969)
The slide guitar riff runs on a single note for most of the track’s duration while Iggy delivers a lyric of aggressive self-abasement that had no precedent in rock. Ron Asheton played the simplest possible part with total commitment. The piano chimes throughout like something heard from another room. Punk bands borrowed the riff, the attitude, and the relationship between minimalism and intensity without always acknowledging the source.
