#9: I Can’t Control Myself — The Troggs (1966)
Reg Presley’s vocal sits at the edge of control throughout, sneering and pushing against the song’s basic structure in ways that had no precedent in British pop. The barely suppressed aggression and the primitive recording quality placed it years ahead of its time. When punk bands talked about British proto-punk, they usually cited the Kinks and the Who. They should have started here.
