McVay’s name was finally cleared after decades of survivor advocacy, historical review, and the efforts of a young student, Hunter Scott, whose school project helped renew attention to the case. In 2000, Congress passed a resolution stating McVay should be exonerated, and President Bill Clinton signed it. The Navy later entered the language into his record. It came far too late, but it came.
