Founded by Alexander the Great in 331 BCE, Alexandria has been an important Mediterranean port for over two thousand years. Today, parts of the historic coastal city are sinking because of erosion, groundwater issues, and rising sea levels. Experts fear future flooding could damage neighborhoods and ancient archaeological sites.
