#7: Solo Synchronized Swimming — 1984–1992
The phrase “solo synchronized swimming” has inspired decades of jokes because the obvious question is: synchronized with whom? The answer is the music. Solo competitors performed carefully choreographed routines requiring timing, flexibility, underwater control, and precise movement in synchronization with their musical accompaniment. The event debuted at Los Angeles 1984 and survived through Barcelona 1992 before being dropped. It sounded ridiculous mainly because of its name; physically, maintaining an elegant routine while repeatedly holding your breath was anything but easy.
