#8: Olympic Poetry, Painting, Sculpture, and Music — 1912–1948
For seven editions of the Games, artists could stand on an Olympic podium just like runners and wrestlers. Competitions rewarded sport-inspired works in architecture, literature, music, painting, and sculpture. Pierre de Coubertin himself even won the first literature gold in 1912 under pseudonyms for his “Ode to Sport.” The contests survived through London 1948 before Olympic officials concluded that most serious artists were professionals, clashing with amateur regulations. Apparently professionals could create masterpieces—just not Olympic ones.
