#14: Chickens Need Not Apply
Livestock restrictions were common in suburban deeds, banning residents from keeping animals such as chickens, goats, or other farm stock on residential lots. The rule marked a line between the new suburb and the rural land many developments had replaced. Yesterday’s potato field could become tomorrow’s subdivision, but apparently the chickens did not receive invitations. Ordinary household pets were treated differently. Suburbia wanted pastoral scenery, neatly trimmed lawns, and none of the actual agricultural soundtrack.
