#20: The Real Rule Was Conformity
Perhaps the strangest rule was the unwritten one tying everything together: your private property was expected to serve the neighborhood’s public image. Grass height, paint, laundry, fences, pets, additions, and even who could live there became tools for manufacturing uniformity. Formal HOAs were not always the enforcers; developers and deed covenants often did the job instead.
