#5: No Laundry on Sundays
Even approved laundry equipment came with a calendar. Levittown residents were told not to hang clothes outdoors on Sundays or holidays, keeping wash out of sight on days when neighborhoods were expected to look polished. The restriction feels wonderfully strange now, but appearance was central to the suburban sales pitch. Sunday could be for church, family, or grilling. It was apparently not the appropriate moment for bed sheets to begin waving publicly beside the hydrangeas.
