#6: You Couldn’t Just Repaint Your House
Some Levittown homeowners could not repaint their houses in whatever shade caught their eye. Exterior colors were part of the development’s planned appearance, and changes required permission. The goal was visual continuity across streets filled with similar homes. Individual expression had limits, especially if it came in a paint can. You could own the house, mow the lawn, and pay the mortgage, yet somebody else might have strong feelings about whether your siding became blue.
