#12: Inherit the Wind (1960)
Based on a play by the same name from 1955, Inherit the Wind is a fictional retelling of the 1925 Scopes Monkey Trial. In it, Fredric March and Spencer Tracy play opposing counsel lawyers in the famed trial that put creationism and evolution head-to-head.

When it came out in 1960, Inherit the Wind was also seen as a scathing criticism of the then-rampant McCarthyism—specifically, a pushback against the censorship inflicted by Senator Joseph McCarthy’s unfounded Red Scare. It received several Academy Awards, BAFTA, and Golden Globe nominations, though it won none of them.
