#5: Lost Horizon (1937)
You’ll see Frank Capra’s name on this list quite a few times. Yet, Lost Horizon was not one of his smash hits. In fact, it received mixed reviews upon its release in 1937. Its preview, with the film being three and a half hours long (shortened from six hours!), was a disaster, with audiences walking out. But in its two-hour form, Lost Horizon is a reality-bending marvel.

Based on a book of the same name, this film is ultimately about moderation and the lines between reality and a dream. That’s because a group of plane crash survivors find themselves in Shangri-La – a paradise that the characters find difficult to eventually leave behind. There is even a musical production of Lost Horizon from 1973.
