#11: Power Rangers (2017) — Planned Film Series
Lionsgate and Saban Entertainment had ambitions extending far beyond a single Power Rangers reboot. Before the 2017 movie arrived, executives publicly discussed the possibility of multiple installments, with Saban Brands founder Haim Saban even mentioning plans that could potentially stretch across several films. The movie itself clearly anticipates continuation: its mid-credits scene introduces the name Tommy Oliver, setting up the Green Ranger, one of the franchise’s recognizable characters, for a sequel. The problem was financial rather than a shortage of mythology. Power Rangers earned roughly $142 million worldwide against a reported production budget of about $100 million, making it difficult to justify another expensive theatrical installment once marketing costs were considered. The envisioned continuation consequently failed to materialize, and the property changed corporate hands when Hasbro acquired the Power Rangers brand from Saban in 2018.
