#17: Eragon (2006) — Planned Inheritance Cycle Sequels
Christopher Paolini’s Eragon looked ideal for Hollywood’s post-Lord of the Rings search for another expansive fantasy franchise. The source novel was already part of a developing literary saga, meaning 20th Century Fox potentially had multiple installments available if the first adaptation succeeded. The movie introduced Ed Speleers as Eragon alongside Saphira, Brom, Arya, Murtagh, and the larger conflict with King Galbatorix, leaving numerous unresolved storylines intended to continue beyond the ending. Financially, Eragon was not an outright catastrophe: it earned roughly $250 million worldwide against a substantially smaller reported production budget. Critical reception, however, was extremely poor, and many readers objected to major alterations and omissions that would have complicated faithful adaptation of subsequent books. Despite the existing audience for Paolini’s novels, Fox never produced a sequel based on Eldest. The planned cinematic journey therefore stopped almost immediately after introducing its world.
