#18: The Last Airbender (2010) — Planned Sequels
M. Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender was explicitly designed to begin a trilogy adapting Nickelodeon’s acclaimed animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender. The first movie roughly covers major events from the show’s first season, while its ending introduces Azula and points directly toward the Fire Nation conflicts that would dominate subsequent installments. Shyamalan discussed plans for sequels, meaning audiences were expected to watch Aang’s complete journey unfold across multiple theatrical films. The first adaptation instead became infamous. Critics attacked its storytelling, performances, exposition-heavy dialogue, pronunciation changes, and handling of the source material, while casting decisions generated substantial controversy. The movie still earned roughly $320 million worldwide against a reported $150 million production budget, but that performance was not strong enough to overcome its reception and justify another expensive installment. Paramount never produced the planned sequel, leaving Aang’s cinematic battle unfinished. The original animated series remained enormously popular and eventually received another live-action adaptation from Netflix.
