Spike was introduced on Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997) as a temporary villain who was not expected to remain for long. James Marsters made the vampire too entertaining to lose. Spike eventually developed from enemy to antihero and romantic interest, becoming one of the series’ most important characters before its final season.
