Hollywood loves a comeback story, but not every child star spends adulthood waiting for one. Some discovered that veterinary medicine, teaching, law, firefighting, photography, software, or even rocket recovery sounded considerably better than another audition. A few occasionally return for cameos or fan events, but acting stopped being their real profession long ago.
#1: Peter Ostrum — Veterinarian
Peter Ostrum found the golden ticket at 12 when he landed his only movie role as Charlie Bucket in Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. Rather than chase another Hollywood job, he turned down a three-picture contract, attended veterinary school at Cornell, and spent decades treating large animals, particularly dairy cattle. Ostrum retired from veterinary practice in 2023. He occasionally resurfaces for Wonka nostalgia—including a 2026 Netflix cameo—but acting never became his profession again.
