Chris McCandless Reached Denali National Park by Hitchhiking From South Dakota Up to Alaska.
Chris started his trip to Alaska by hitchhiking from South Dakota up to Alaska in April 1992. After Chris landed in Fairbanks, he was able to hitch a ride with Jim Gallien, an electrician, and continue his journey away from the city. Chris was given the name Alex by the famous homeless man and author W.H. Davies, who was the source of the name Alexander Supertramp.
Chris was named after W.H. Davies. Jim was nervous about taking “Alex” to Denali National Park because it was a place he had never been before, but he ultimately consented. Jim was concerned about the young man’s well-being because he had no food or water. He tried to convince “Alex” to accompany his grocery shopping at the nearby supermarket. Sadly, he lacked any desire to participate in it. “Alex” finally gave in and decided to carry a pair of rubber boots with him before he departed.
