#14: CIA Support During the Syrian Crisis (1949)
Syria experienced one of the first military coups in the modern Arab world in 1949. American officials wanted a government more friendly to Western interests and regional oil projects. The CIA reportedly supported military officer Husni al-Za’im, whose short rule increased political instability and helped begin Syria’s long history of military intervention in politics.
