#21: CIA Support for South Vietnam’s Government (1955)
After French colonial rule collapsed in Indochina, the United States backed Ngo Dinh Diem in South Vietnam during 1955. The CIA helped strengthen his government as Washington tried to block communist expansion in Southeast Asia. This support played a major role in shaping the conflict that later became the Vietnam War.
