#7: CIA Involvement in Chile Before the 1973 Coup
After Salvador Allende won Chile’s 1970 election, the CIA funded opposition groups and supported efforts to weaken his government. The United States feared another socialist government in Latin America after Cuba. Economic pressure and political conflict grew until General Augusto Pinochet overthrew Allende in 1973 and established military rule.
