Back in the 1980s, central Melbourne felt completely dead after five o’clock when office workers headed for the suburbs. City planners noticed a hidden network of old bluestone service lanes behind major buildings and decided to revive them. They paved the alleys, added outdoor seating, and encouraged small cafes, art galleries, and bars to move in. Locals and tourists fell in love with these cozy spaces.
