#15: Black Troops Fought Before the Film Glory (1989) Suggests
The movie Glory (1989) popularized the 54th Massachusetts, but African American soldiers saw combat earlier. In 1862, the First Kansas Colored Volunteers fought Confederate forces at Island Mound, Missouri. This happened before the Emancipation Proclamation, showing that Black troops were already active and helping push acceptance of their service.
