#17: Desertion Was Common on Both Sides
It is easy to imagine soldiers staying loyal throughout the war, but desertion was widespread. Harsh conditions, fear, and long separations from family led many men to leave their units. Both Union and Confederate armies struggled to maintain numbers, especially as the war dragged on and morale dropped.
