#16: John Chancellor
John Chancellor anchored NBC Nightly News through much of the politically turbulent 1970s. A veteran correspondent who had reported internationally and covered national politics, Chancellor brought intelligence and visible skepticism to the desk. After stepping down as anchor, he remained a respected commentator. His delivery suggested that government claims deserved examination rather than applause, a useful quality during Watergate and an occasionally inconvenient one for officials appearing on television nationwide every evening for viewers everywhere.
