Steven Van Zandt brilliantly organized the recording of “Sun City” as an absolute, unified refusal to perform at the South African luxury resort. The bold project masterfully connected antiwar and anti-militarist sentiments to anti-apartheid politics. The massive roster of participating superstar artists made it impossible for mainstream radio stations to treat the protest as marginal.
