The matchlock musket transformed warfare in the 1500s and 1600s, but it depended on a slow-burning cord kept lit at all times. Soldiers used large amounts of match and risked igniting their own powder. Rain and wind caused problems, too. Safer flintlock firearms eventually replaced this early technology.
