#5: The Puckle Gun Was Ahead of Its Time but Too Complicated
Patented in 1718 by James Puckle, the Puckle gun promised rapid fire against boarding parties. In practice, its flintlock mechanism was awkward and unreliable. Very few were built, and the Board of Ordnance declined to adopt it widely.
