#14: When Paint Consumed Its Own Canvas
Some artworks begin aging badly because of the materials chosen by the artist, which makes the damage feel almost built into the work. Modern and contemporary artists have often experimented with industrial paints, unstable pigments, plastics, latex, and mixtures never designed to last for generations. That spirit of experimentation can produce powerful results, but it can also leave conservators with surfaces that crack, discolor, sag, or chemically interact with their supports.
