#19: Rolling History Too Tightly
Painted scrolls, hanging textiles, and thangkas were made to move in ways framed paintings are not, but age changes their flexibility. When an old painted scroll is rolled too tightly for storage, the paint layer may crack, flake, or crease along the curve. The damage can be especially heartbreaking because rolling is often part of the object’s normal life. The problem is not the idea of storage itself, but pressure, speed, tightness, and repeated handling after materials have become brittle. A scroll may appear safely tucked away while tiny breaks form inside the roll.
