#13: Lana Del Rey — Doin’ Time
Sublime’s 1996 original was a laid-back, hip-hop-infused punk rock track that sampled Gershwin’s “Summertime” to describe a frustrating relationship. Lana Del Rey transformed the track into a dream-pop soundscape filled with lush string arrangements, trip-hop beats, and hazy, reverb-drenched vocals. She stripped away the original’s gritty nineties alternative edge, replacing it with a glamorous, melancholic California fantasy.
